Born Into Brothels: Calcutta's Red Light Kids

I recently watched a movie called "Born Into Brothels" and it's touched me on a level almost unfelt before. The movie was released almost 4 years ago, and I've heard of it a couple times before, but I feel it hasn't been getting as much recognition as it should, despite winning the Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival, and at several other film festivals.

"Born Into Brothels: Calcutta's Red Light Kids" is a documentary that Zana Briski fortunately stumbled on. In attempt to film, photograph and document prostitutes in the part of India little known, she delightfully got close to their children. She began to educate them in the means of photography to capture their lifestyle and culture with the cameras that she provided for them. In turn, Zana Auntie (so the kids called her) helped give the children hope for a better future, as well as, education, food, and a place to live. Through twists and turns you learn more about each child and their family via personal stories and their own photography.

Absolutely loved this film. The idea of being able to give back to a community who would otherwise have little or no access to an art is empowering for everyone involved, and should be a part of every artist's growth...

Born Into Brothels Kids Sue Filmmakers! (Calcutta newspaper, August 2008)

Yes, it's true.

Born Into Brothels is a story of lies, half truths, distortions and exploitation. I invite you to read the newest blog and numerous other articles written on the hidden story behind the Hollywood-blessed "documentary." You read, you decide. It's your call.
