It has been way too long since I posted an Adrian x Kayla shoot! To

be perfectly honest every time I went to post it, I would get all too

overwhelmed at how many phenomenal choices AJ gave me, that I

would put it off!! Not a bad problem to have, if only I wasn't one of

the most indecisive characters....

I do not wear this jacket as much as I should, I find myself putting

it on and walking around my house playing with the fringe and then

taking it off before I leave. It has that amazing Woodstock 70's vibe,

sometimes I feel like everything I wear is so 70's inspired that I would

look like I just walked off the set of a movie if I added this jacket to the

maxi skirt, flowing tops and clogs. I started ripping shirts out of pure

boredom and now i can't stop! it is just such an interesting element to

add to a boring T-shirt, my next move is to add american flag patches

to the shoulders."

Sorry I haven't been posting, 2011 has been so productive as far as work, friends, and family is concerned. I'm really trying to squeeze in some time today to post some work I did over the Winter. This shoot was a collaboration with a good friend, Sam Franada. He was creative director and designer for the project, which was producing posters for Westlake Dance Center's annual "Sign Of The Times" show. I'm privileged to have friends who think of me immediately when photo projects come up, especially when everyone carries around a camera these days. Honored and humbling to say the least. Below are a couple of my favorites from the shoot and then the final design that Sam produced.

This was most definitely one of my favorite sets that Kayla and I collaborated on. I was a little reluctant to ask her how she felt about the taxidermy'd deer head... but I really wanted to incorporate it, so I just laid it out. And without hesitation, she was down! Haha. I'm overly pleased with how these photos turned out... I see more plain white walls, props, and beautiful people in my photography future.

I found these pants at the good ole West Seattle Senior Center that came with
a matching top for $6, and if that isn't a good enough deal it was their monthly
sale so everything was an additional 20% off! (also where my boyfirend coined
the term OLS for me old lady syndrome) I love Donna Karen circa 1990, she is still
great, but something about her earlier work just makes me think of the classic
"power suit woman".

I love antlers and deer, so when AJ asked me if I thought it was weird
to incorporate these horns and taxidermy deer head I was thrilled!

Phirom and her girlfriend Jess had planned to go to The Nutcracker, and so they figured, if we're going to get all dressed up, we might as well have photos done too! This particular shoot was more than fast... it's beyond me how I managed to fit so many shots in such a small time frame, haha... but it happened! And here they are...

I rarely shoot events, let alone ones that are held in bars or clubs, but I'll make exceptions for only two reasons: (1) if the event is private, (2) or it's for fashion's sake. And this event fulfilled both requirements! I responded to a tweet that Max, the owner of DELI, sent out looking for a photographer for a private Nudie Jeans Co. event. I quickly replied. It was held at MOE Bar on Capitol Hill and I also shot photos for the pop-up shop inside DELI.

I went to down to Southern California for my cousin Shela's wedding. I never really have high expectations when I go there to visit, because of the amount of family that I have in SoCal, it's rarely a vacation. But it was great to escape Seattle's wet & cold weather. And all in all, it's always nice to visit my family! And I ended up seeing my grandpa, who served in the Vietnam War, on Veteran's Day! First time ever :]

Vancity - 2010

A few friends and I visited a close friend, Patricia, in her town, Vancouver, B.C. I haven't actually visited the city since I was around 13, and at that time all my family did was go to China Town to smuggle fruits back to Seattle, haha. So it was really refreshing to actually visit the city. The style, the people, the scenery were all amazing. Amongst our other cities, I really love the fact that I grew up in the PNW. All in all, it was a hella good time! I sort of fell in love with the city... and if it were a part of the U.S., then I'd move there. Here are some photos of our adventure! Enjoy.

This set was shot inside my studio. We had a little more fun with the lighting and the overall aesthetic. I'm not so outrageous with my style of photography, because I love clean lines and crisp edges... but I think this was a healthy break from norm, yet integrating my general style. And you'll see that with the other sets to come!

I love Autumn shoots! And thanks to my dear friend Brooke, I've been able to do various types of shoots via here mom's vintage shop. This latest shoot with Urban Xchange was solely for their Etsy Store. Brooke's been focusing more on that shop and has been successfully posting new things as they come. So, please check it out! Overall, this shoot was great, I had a lot of fun working with these lovely ladies... and though it was cold, they really hung in there and helped me produce some great shots! "Welcome to the Good Night" - Faux Editorial (Two)

Here's my second faux editorial. I'm not really sure what sparked this spread, but it all just came to me one night after looking over some photo shoots. I'd say this shoot is one of my top 5's, so I just had to do something else with this, other then just letting it sit there! In no way am I claiming to be a graphic designer or a pro in a typography... but I do believe if I set my mind to it, I can really, really do this! I'll actually be taking a class in typography at SVC with my friend Sara in January, needless to say, I'm super stoked! Thanks for checking it out :]

The Gomez Wedding - Issaquah, Wa.

I went into this wedding without an assistant. My friend backed out a few days before, because of school, which I would also consider priority, as long as you're attending. With such short notice, and the wedding being on a Friday, I just gave up on replacing her. It was a good 12-hour day, but I've shot enough weddings now to know when & how many shots I should take... so I limited myself from pure exhaustion. I took a third as many shots as I did for my very first wedding. Like any other wedding, there were complications and we did the bride & groom shots a month later, after they got from their honeymoon... and before I left on my vacations (photos to come!) Maxie Jamal - Queens, NYC

While we stayed at Renato's apartment in Queens, Maxie was also staying their for business. She too is from Seattle, but was doing some choreography for Willow Smith's upcoming single release/party. We had already planned on shooting before I came out, but I wasn't really sure what to do... since I rarely shoot dancers. After picking outfits, and locating different places to shoot, I really didn't have to do much! She was an awesome subject, and you'll see why...

There aren't enough words in the dictionary to sum up my first trip to New York. It was an utmost amazing experience... I'm not really sure what to even say, haha. We walked no less than 8hrs/day, ate our weight in pizza every time the clock struck 4am, and made more noise on the street than any parade of marching taxi cabs. If I don't move there in this lifetime, then I will surely die a sad death. With that said, anyone know of apartments & job openings (concerning photography) in New York?

Freestyle Theory Fashion Show - Bellevue, Wa.

I had the opportunity to shoot at Seven & Zebra Club's annual Freestyle Theory Fashion Show this year. I love shooting fashion (as you all may know) and shows, because of the lighting... so this was an amazing experience for me. It was the last show for Bellevue's Fashion Week, so it definitely left its mark! This industry really gets a bad rep, because I felt genuinely welcomed & everyone was just there to have a good time. An old friend, Chelsea, from when I was working at Urban Outfitters was coming up on her senior year at the Art Institute of Seattle and she had always talked about doing a shoot for her clothing designs. It was just about that time to make a lookbook of her collection for her final project... so after several emails we had an 8-hour day, with 3 locations and an initial tailgate of hair & makeup, haha. Built for Man, Renovation - Seattle, Wa.

I was introduced to Francisco Hernandez through the editorial I shot for DList. We used his collection, Built for Man, for the spread as well local designer (now in New York), Jill Lindsey. He brought up a couple times about how he'd like to renovate his website and how he needed a go-to photographer for this project. We then exchanged business cards, wrote a couple emails, and got to work! It was a long 8 hours of shooting, styling, & posing for the team; Andrew the model, and Francisco with his assistant, Brianne. But we managed to make it strong throughout the day and I came out with some awesome shots at the Built for Man studio. Though the website is not live just yet, I know that Brandon's design will make this project more than successful. Please keep checking to see when www.BuiltforMan.com will be up & running!

"Bon Dia, Anna" - Faux Editorial

I've delve into design here & there within the last 2-3 years, pretty much the same amount that I've been shooting photos, but nothing major. I had a design internship (which eventually turned into photography) with a start-up fashion company via an old friend, Sam Franada, but I'd say it was more technical rather than creative on my part. I won't trivialize the experience and what I learned, but I know that if I had the same mindset as I did now, I would have gained so much more. With that said, I've decided to combine my love for fashion, photography, and editorial (alongside typography) design to create this... (and I decided to use my most favored shoot that I've done in my so-called professional career.)

I shot for UrbanXchange's Esty shop the same week I shot for DList's editorial. And ever since I've been attempting to catch up. So you might see some work out, but not posted on my blog, but I'm really adamant about keeping this blog as chronologically correct as possible, so bear with me :]

This was a really fun shoot! Brooke found this awesome little nook underneath the apartment structure that UrbanXchange is connected to. It's actually the apartment's laundromat, haha. So we set up shop there, Brooke dressed our models, Ashley and Anna (and herself as well), and I got to work. I love using bounce flash in small spaces... I know it's a little Terry-Richardson-esque, but you can't deny that when you're shooting fashion, flash more than serves its purpose. Take a look at some of the shots Brooke and I chose! DList Sept. Fashion Editorial

My first fashion editorial! I was honored when an old friend that I once interned with at a start-up fashion company asked me to shoot the DList's September issue's fashion editorial. As most things in today's network saavy community, it started out with a tweet... and ended with multiple outfits, 3 locations, 8 hours, and a crew of 10. I was asked specifically to do this project solely because I use very little equipment and the spread needed to be cohesive, yet look as if the models were on-the-go. And because I use close to no equipment, the overall plan for the shoot had some holes, so I had more creative freedom; ideas, concepts, input, etc. I wasn't too hot about the 80-degree Sun, but the crew and models were very cooperative and it was an overall success. I'm very pleased with the outcome of this shoot as well as excited to have my own editorial in a magazine :]

I shot Noah about a month ago. We've shot before, but he needed new promo shots for all the new music that he's been coming out with. We started a little later than expected, but managed to get some good shots. He wasn't too particular about what he needed and having doing promos before, the simpler, the better. Especially when it comes to dead space, you'll need that to make room for the design work, ie: artist, album name, etc. So overall, I kept everything clean, crisp and to-the-point. 'Zaw, Capitol Hill - Seattle, Wa.

I had the opportunity to shoot for Jeff Butler, an interior designer. He had helped on a few designs projects for a small firm upon graduating from The Art Institute of Seattle. One of which was 'Zaw, a fancier to-go pizza parlor that accompanies there delicious slices of goodness with wine, local brews, and Seattle's own Jones Sodas. It was a fun shoot; seeing as I rarely shoot retail/restaurant spaces it was nice to dive into something that doesn't really require me to give direction to models. This is just 1 of 4 shoots that I'll be working on with Jeff. Stay tuned for more!

Kathryn Claus, Professional Singer - Seattle, Wa.

The first time I heard Kathryn sing was when I was shooting a Blue Scholars show/event at Shorewood High School in 2006. When she came up with my friend's band Becker I was taken back by her natural beauty and once she started to sing, instant fireworks! Fast forward to now, about a month ago she got ahold of me via email and inquired a photo shoot, and without a hesitation, I was in. Since graduating from PLU Kathryn's been having gigs here and there and needed to get some head shots done for press kits and whatnot. It was an awesome day of shooting, we worked with what the Sun was offering, and we ended with a nice catch-up session. Best of luck to you Kathryn! :]

Anthony & Adrienne, Engagement Photos - Seattle, Wa.

I've known Anthony for quite awhile now and to see him and Adrienne together, off-the-bat, I knew that they were so perfect for each other. They have a certain balance to each other's personality, complimenting one another, but at the same time, are so similar. This was a fun shoot! We literally went all over the place, from the SAM Sculpture Park, to Kerry Park, to Alki, and back to Belltown. It was great to have a variety of places to choose from, and Seattle's the perfect place to do that... everything is always in 15-20 minutes of each other. I decided to edit these photos differently from the one's I had sent them, only because I knew they'd like the alternate better than mine. Here's the set! Enjoy :]

Adam Isaac Jackson, Illustrator/Designer - Tacoma, Wa.

This is Adam. He's an amazing illustrator and designer! Adam needed some shots for websites and blogs that he's being featured for, as well as just photos for future archival use. He had moved into this house, where we shot, a few months ago and more recently him and his wife Savannah had their first kid, Maximilian Luther Jackson. It was an awesome shoot and it was great to connect with someone who is experiencing the same struggles of being an artist; feeling as if your passion is overwhelming, but at the same time almost insufficient. We just have to be reminded of why we love what we do.

Anna Mischke, Impromptu Shoot - Tacoma, Wa.

When I was in Tacoma shooting Brooke, Anna came along, and in between a location change we decided to shoot a little bit. I'm not sure we can be around each other and not take at least one photo, whether it be with my D-SLR, point-and-shoot, or on our phones. I'm sure the world would reverse it's rotation and flip its axis if we didn't. It did take me awhile to realize this; roughly 6 photo shoots later, and months & months of hanging out... but she is my muse.

Sarah & Julian's Wedding - University Place, Wa.

I shot this wedding back in May, but I just recently found time to actually post some favorites. It was a really cute & quaint wedding in the backyard of Sarah's mom's house. The guest list barely hit 100 people and the wedding lasted about 3 hours, ceremony + reception. It was a perfect day to shoot, the itinerary could have not gone any smoother and preceding the 15 min ceremony a little jazz trio played throughout the reception. Ideally, I'd like something just like this, but given the largeness of my family tree, it'll never happen, haha. Congratulations, once again, to Sarah & Julian! I had been inspired by a spread I saw in Esquire and we sort of toyed with the woodsy idea, knowing that the Ace Hotel would be aesthetically sufficient. I always love shooting with Anna and I'm sure you guys can tell why, but way beyond looks, she is an amazing, talented, hard-working and overall genuine person.

This is Brooke and Derek. This is the second of the three shoots that I shot in Portland. I originally named this shoot "An Indie Kind of Love" a spin on Phil Collin's "A Groovy Kind of Love," haha. Hopefully really soon I'll be able to connect with my ex-co-worker & friend, Leroy. We've been texting to figure out the best time to meet-up, but our schedules are crazy. He's a local artist that has a really dope style, incomparable to what I've ever seen. After I get a chance to shoot his artwork I'd like to try to get him hooked up with a show of his own... he's ready for big things! I recently watched a documentary called Helvetica (by Gary Hustwit). It goes into the history of the typeface as well as the pros and cons & opinions of new and old school graphic designers. I had high hopes for this film and I wasn't disappointed at all. After seeing so many poorly done documentaries, Helvetica made something that the average person would find uninteresting into a film that typeface nerds can be proud of.

One of my model friend's told me to check out Prada's new Spring/Summer 2009 line, and I fell in love. More-so with the concept and photos rather than the fashion itself, but nonetheless Prada hasn't failed either way.

Born Into Brothels: Calcutta's Red Light Kids

I recently watched a movie called "Born Into Brothels" and it's touched me on a level almost unfelt before. The movie was released almost 4 years ago, and I've heard of it a couple times before, but I feel it hasn't been getting as much recognition as it should, despite winning the Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival, and at several other film festivals.

"Born Into Brothels: Calcutta's Red Light Kids" is a documentary that Zana Briski fortunately stumbled on. In attempt to film, photograph and document prostitutes in the part of India little known, she delightfully got close to their children. She began to educate them in the means of photography to capture their lifestyle and culture with the cameras that she provided for them. In turn, Zana Auntie (so the kids called her) helped give the children hope for a better future, as well as, education, food, and a place to live. Through twists and turns you learn more about each child and their family via personal stories and their own photography.

This is from a MySpace bulletin that Zach Braff had posted late last night. And I couldn't have said it better myself; do what you love, do not shield yourself from your own talent... life's too short to follow someone else's dreams.

"I have been trying to think of why the entire Earth is currently so taken by this woman (Susan Boyle). And I realized she is iconic of so many things that all of us hide within ourselves; puzzle pieces of our personalities that we shield from everyone we know. And after a lifetime of withholding this rare beauty from the world; she steps up to a microphone (while a giant audience laughs at her) and reveals her secret to the planet.

I cant get her out of my mind. I cant stop the inevitable goosebumps and my eyes from welling each time I watch it. I hope that everyone with a child who sees this video, sits them down and says, "Life is short. Do not hide yourself. Do not lurk in the shadows. Do not wait a lifetime to start being whomever it is that you are. Sing. No matter how hard they laugh at you... sing."

I love Susan Boyle. If anyone out there makes Susan Boyle flags, let me know. I will personally have a flag pole installed in my yard just so I can raise my Susan Boyle flag.
